Once a Classic, Now an It-Item, Fair Isle Sweaters Are Taking Over Street Style

The Fair Isle sweater has long been a staple in the wardrobes of skiers, après skiers, royals, and, of course, those who inhabit the Shetland Islands on which the sweater originated. As of late, however, the knit has become a common street style go-to and a hero on the runways.

In Pre-Fall and Fall 2021 presentations, Loewe and Balenciaga put a modernized spin on the garment that feels more street than Swiss chalet, thanks to pairings with baggy cargo pants, sweats, and graphic hoodies. Molly Goddard reimagined the festive style as a layering piece for evening wear—pairing sleeveless Fair Isle vests over the label’s voluminous tulle gowns.

The contrasting pairing has garnered the attention and approval of cool it-girls around the world. We’ve seen quite a few street-style warriors putting their own unique twists on the graphic knit. From Copenhagen to Paris, they’re showing us the modern way to wear the preppy jumper with slouchy drawstring shorts, vibrant pink puffers, and purposely unbuttoned jeans.

The color knit has come a long way from aristo-associations; it’s a seasonal staple that feels just as cool as any other fall wardrobe must-have. All this to say, it’s time to get yourself one of the best Fair isle sweaters. Shop our edit below.
