Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you’re gawking at it from the outside. In this new column, we’ll be examining the celebrity couples—or, occasionally, friend pairs—who give us hope for our own romantic futures as we try to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.
Extremely gay gossip hound voice Okay, you didn’t hear it from me, but singers Kehlani and SZA were spotted holding hands on the way to Rihanna‘s Met Gala afterparty on Monday. Are they dating? Probably not, but we can hope, right? Witness the firsthand evidence for yourself below, courtesy of some eagle-eyed paparazzo or other:
It bears mentioning that just because two people are holding hands does not mean they’re a couple, regardless of their sexualities (and regardless of how desperately I want them to live a long and happy life together). We all survived the “is Taylor Swift queer?” era, and hopefully, we learned from it that wishing and hoping that our favorite celebrities are part of the LGBTQ+ community does not actually make them so.
To be honest, I have zero insider intel about whether Kehlani and SZA are dating, or even interested in each other “in that way”; while Kehlani came out as a lesbian earlier this year after having previously identified as queer and bisexual, SZA has never spoken publicly about her sexual orientation, though as a scholar of her 2017 album Ctrl, I would point to the lyric “Love on my ladies, luh-love to my ladies/Dated a few” from the song “Love Galore” as potential—potential!—evidence of sapphic inclinations.
Ultimately, Kehlani and SZA are probably just party-hopping friend, but all I can say is that I hope to see them entering many, many Met Gala afterparties hand in hand in the future. More pals holding hands at parties hosted by Rihanna, please!
